Maximising Public Value from Datacenter Projects
The establishment of a data center within the municipality offers numerous opportunities, but is simultaneously encountering increasing resistance from the local population. To fully exploit the potential, all levels of the value chain must be considered and synergies strategically developed. This includes the levels as illustrated in our onion skin model.
We distinguish between two basic strategies that can complement each other:
Inside-Out: based on the planned computing power and the associated infrastructure, further businesses will be established.A possible objective is the development of digital clusters or—one of our core topics—digital parks.
Outside-in: Hyperscalers in particular offer few immediate advantages in their immediate vicinity.In order to still benefit from the momentum generated by their establishment, one can either leverage the image as an obviously attractive location for digital infrastructure for the establishment of accessible data centers and, for example, develop a regional digital strategy.
In both cases, depending on the location, the municipality should focus on the following issues:
What specific benefits can we derive from the energy infrastructure (electricity, waste heat)?
How can we minimize potential noise pollution?
How can we create additional economic value?
How can we ensure affordable and livable housing for our population?
How can we minimize the effects of soil sealing?
