study about german hydrogen industry

On behalf of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung e.V. (KAS) and the Energy and Climate Policy and Innovation Council e.V. (EPICO), the Vienna-based Decision Advisory Group GmbH (DAG) identifies hurdles and risks in long-term decisions to implement the hydrogen strategy of the German federal government. (Press release, February 23, 2021)

Energy-intensive companies in the steel, chemical and cement industries in particular are increasingly under pressure to act due to the recently tightened decarbonisation targets at EU level. Green hydrogen, i.e. one produced using renewable energy sources, is one of the great hopes. Many companies are already addressing the issue of hydrogen and the first projects are underway. It is still largely unclear how concrete the plans for the use of hydrogen are, to what extent they correspond to the goals of the German hydrogen strategy, whether these are sufficient and what dependencies there are on political and regulatory framework conditions.

This is exactly where the DAG study comes in, that analyses where the companies stand with regard to their planning for the use of hydrogen and what challenges they see. Managing Partner Daniel Dantine: "Our expertise enables us to grasp the key hurdles in strategic decisions and their implementation from a company perspective."

Results expected at the beginning of the second quarter of 2021

With this study, DAG, which specializes in strategic decision-making, is also establishing itself in Germany as a contact for industry and the political think-tank scene when it comes to mapping the goals of the energy transition in strategic decision-making management. Managing Partner Dantine says: "We are particularly pleased that we can apply our experience in the field of hydrogen and our methodical knowledge of strategic decisions in industrial companies in such a broad framework." The results of the study are expected at the beginning of the second quarter of 2021.

In a large-scale design lab process by the clients KAS and EPICO, the study results will be further processed over the course of the year and translated into possible political and regulatory approaches. Dr Bernd Weber, Managing Director of EPICO, says: "Due to the special content and methodological expertise of DAG, we expect the study to provide an excellent data basis as a "reality check" for the development of empirically based, target-oriented policy recommendations for the successful implementation of the German hydrogen strategy with innovations and Investment as a driver for sustainable growth.”

National hydrogen strategy should bring Germany world market leadership

The aim of the national hydrogen strategy is to make Germany a pioneer in green hydrogen internationally and to achieve and secure world market leadership in hydrogen technologies in the long term. To this end, green hydrogen production is to be boosted and national and international markets are to be established. Hydrogen should be established as an alternative energy carrier and become a sustainable raw material for industry. Another goal is to further develop the transport and distribution infrastructure. In order to achieve these goals, the action plan provides for 38 defined individual measures by 2030.
